The Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) was established by the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) in 1991 to develop educational programs for women, and create awareness about the prevention, early detection and treatment of gynecologic cancers. The Foundation also supports research and training related to gynecologic cancers.
Gynecologic cancers are the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells originating in the female reproductive organs, including the cervix, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva. These cancers should be treated by gynecologic oncologists who are board-certified obstetricians/gynecologists who have an additional three to four years of specialized training in gynecologic cancers. The specialists have training in the biology and pathology of gynecologic cancers, as well as in all forms of treatment for theses diseases, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and experimental treatments.
The Foundation also sponsors the Woman’s Cancer Network (WCN) www.wcn.org, a comprehensive women’s cancer Internet resource developed to help women discover their potential risks for gynecologic and breast cancers. The site also provides practical information for women who have developed cancer and their families, including information about their disease, available treatment options, access to emerging and experimental therapies, and gynecologic oncologists in their area.
The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) is the oldest survivor-led cancer advocacy organization in the country, advocating for quality cancer care for all Americans and empowering cancer survivors. NCCS believes in evidence-based advocacy for systemic changes at the federal level in how the nation researches, regulates, finances and delivers quality cancer care. In 2004, NCCS launched Cancer Advocacy Now!™, a legislative advocacy network that seeks to involve constituents from across the country in federal cancer-related issues. Patient education is also a priority for NCCS. We believe that access to credible and accurate patient information, such as NCCS’s award-winning Cancer Survival Toolbox® is key to demanding and receiving quality cancer care. For more information about NCCS, its advocacy and patient education materials, please visit www.canceradvocacy.org or call 1.877.NCCS.YES.
The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) is a grassroots membership organization dedicated to ending breast cancer through the power of action and advocacy. Along with its research and education arm the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, the Coalition’s main goals are to increase federal funding for breast cancer research; improve access to high-quality health care and breast cancer clinical trials for all women; and expand the influence of breast cancer advocates wherever breast cancer decisions are made.
The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance’s (OCNA) mission is to conquer ovarian cancer to save women’s lives. Since its inception in 1997, OCNA has been the face and voice of a national network of ovarian cancer survivors and activists. OCNA advocates for increased federal funding for research that leads to an effective early detection test, better treatments, and ultimately a cure for the disease. OCNA also educates women and health care practitioners about ovarian cancer’s symptoms and risk factors to improve the chances that women will be diagnosed earlier. In addition, as the umbrella organization of 45 national, regional and local ovarian cancer groups, OCNA leverages the power of the growing number of voices demanding a different future for everyone who has been or will be touched by ovarian cancer. OCNA’s initiatives include Survivors Teaching Students: Saving Women’s Livessm with support from the Entertainment Industry Foundation, where survivors speak to third-year medical students to help them gain perspective on the real life experiences and emotions of survivors. OCNA provides an online forum offering discussion rooms, blogs and an opportunity to connect virtually with others facing the same issues. ONCA also provides a clinical trials matching service, powered by EmergingMed, to help women locate clinical trials. www.ovariancancer.org
